Peace Teach-In

The Peace Teach-in is an annual 2-day event with the goal to further grow and develop ϲʿ’s capacity for justice and social action. Every year, speakers, panels, activities, performances and experiences shape an interchange on a unique and timely topic that enriches conversations and learning across the University’s many disciplines.

Title: Catalysts for Change: Connecting Humanity to Cultivate Justice

Date: October 22-24, 2024

Description: Through various art forms, narratives, and activities, participants in the 2024 Peace Teach-In will seek to tap the power of peaceful resistance and the human connections that sustain movements for change through embodied experience and transformation. Over the course of three days, presenters and facilitators will envision paths to dismantling injustice and new ways of being and relating to humanity and creation in order to cultivate justice through nonviolent action and right relationship.

2. Gros Memorial Event

Inspired by the seminal vision of Brother Jeffery Gros, FSC, that all people need to work for understanding and unity among varied religious perspectives, the Gros Institute hosts an annual memorial event to explore dimensions of interfaith and intercultural leadership focused on the common good with cutting-edge scholars and practitioners. The event aims to support sustained, justice-centered dialogue toward social action among students, faculty, staff, and neighbors who relate to religion differently.

7TH ANNUAL GROS MEMORIAL EVENT

PART 2
October 23, 2024
7pm-8:30pm
Bridgebuilding as Risky Behavior: Transformative Encounters that Promote Collective Peace

“Combatants for Peace” is a group of extraordinary Palestinians and Israelis who have chosen to work together to promote peace in Israel-Palestine. Join us for a viewing of the film “Disturbing the Peace,” which examines the transitions that many of the members of the group made from combatants to partners for peace. The film is told through compelling interviews with members of the group and demonstrates how recognizing the common humanity in one another is a key to peacebuilding. We will pause the film to allow for small group discussion and to consider how the general principles that the group embodies are applicable to conflicts in our own lives.

3. The FIRE: Fostering Interfaith Relationship through Encounter

The Fire Logo

The annual Interfaith Forum, known as The FIRE (Fostering Interfaith Relationship through Encounter), seeks to bring together representatives of diverse religious traditions and worldviews for the purpose of engaging in dialogue and building bridges across difference. Every year we gather in community around “the FIRE” to share stories, break bread, and connect communities. Often, we find that we share values and convictions that place our feet on common ground, even as we celebrate the rich diversity of one another’s unique traditions and perspectives. We strive to work side by side in a spirit of solidarity to foster greater understanding and action toward justice.

4. Circle Training

Rooted in indigenous practices and utilized for restorative justice, community building, reflection and conflict transformation, peace circles employ ritual, talking pieces, shared values, deep listening, and egalitarian relationship-building to free participants to enter into storytelling and holistic healing. Those in circle reflect on their own journeys and experiences, the interdependence of human beings with one another and creation, and the impact of dysfunctional systems on people and other beings.
